12 Music Music Guitar For Everyone - Part I Learning guitar can be fun, and playing the songs you love is the best way to do it! This workshop combines individual and group instructions, rhythm-training, and eventually small group playing. It is designed for beginners and those who have been playing for a little while. You’ll learn the most efficient way to tune your guitar, basic chords and scales, and picking and strumming techniques. You’ll also learn the basics of lead guitar and elements of improvisation. The only requirements are a passion for music, an acoustic guitar and an electric tuner. It’s also recommended you practice at least 3 hours per week between lessons. Building on concepts from Guitar For Everyone, Part I, we will work on the music you love in a group setting and individual lessons. We will continue to build group performance skill, improvisational ability, and understanding of theory (as it pertains to popular music). If you haven’t taken Guitar For Everyone, Part I, but are familiar with the basics of playing guitar, you’re welcome to join us! Participate in one of the oldest forms of communal singing, rounds, which is a song sung by 2 or 3, or more groups of people. One group starts off and the next group starts to sing the same song a bit later. The song is sung several times, hence, rounds. We welcome amateurs and musicians alike. 8 Tuesdays • 7 - 8pm • March 5 - April 30 • $89 (No class April 16) MU11-S19 Instructor: Manoj Padki Hand Drumming and Drum Circles - Level 1 Do you want to play a musical instrument, but are intimidated by the commitment to hours of practicing or learning music theory? Playing hand drums in a drum circle is a wonderful alternative because it allows you to participate in a satisfying musical experience without the years of training. And it’s so much fun that it doubles as a social event as well! You’ll learn the basic technique for playing a West African djembe, which is the most common type of drum found at public drum circles. You’ll also learn how to write, read and play basic rhythmic patterns that are the foundations of many musical traditions. No prior music experience is necessary to take this course.  Each class is a mixture of formal instruction with lots of hands-on participation, as well as some unstructured “jam time” to try out your new skills.All  instruments are provided, although you are welcome to bring your own hand drum if you own one. 5 Wednesdays • 7 - 8:30pm • March 13 - April 10 • $99 (Last class ends at 9pm) MU04-S19 Instructor: David Curry Hand Drumming and Drum Circles - Level 2 Are you ready to continue growing your hand drumming skills and confidence as a hand drummer? This course is a continuation of the basic concepts covered in the Level 1 Hand Drumming class. If you haven’t taken the Level 1 class but are familiar with the basics of playing hand drums, you are welcome to join us. We’ll learn rhythms from various cultural sources, including Afro-Cuban, Brazilian, and Middle Eastern. We will discuss how to buy a drum, how to tune a drum, and tips on how to survive in a public drum circle with more experienced players. Each class is a mixture of formal instruction and a “jam session” to try out your new skills!
