Hobbies & CraftsS14HC01 - Learn to Sew!

This is a painless course that begins with the basics. Learn to sew and you’ll be able to create clothes that flatter while also saving money. We will start by making pajamas because it is a great way to discuss collars, facings, button holes, and sleeves. Topics to be covered include fabric selection; cutting and assembling; fitting and finishing; zippers; hems; and darts.

Note: Bring your own sewing machine, if it’s in good working order, or use ours. Wait until after the first class before purchasing fabric and pattern. Bring a dressmaker’s tape with you to class.

Hobbies & CraftsS14HC02 - Bargello Quilt

Bargello quilt patterns are created by sewing fabric strips together to give the look of a geometric wave. These quilts are strikingly beautiful and remarkably durable. During this class you will work on a quilt that measures 47” x 58” - a great size for a stunning wall hanging! This class geared for all level quilters.

Note: Students will be mailed a supply list when they register. Sewing machines are supplied, but if you do decide to bring your own machine, please make sure it is in good working order. Students should bring a lunch and meet the instructor at the main entrance at 9:00 AM.

Hobbies & CraftsS14HC03 - The Irish Chain Quilt

The Irish Chain pattern is done by arranging squares to make diagonal lines, giving the quilt its distinct look. The Single Irish Chain quilt uses two different fabrics, and the Double Irish Chain quilt uses three different fabrics. This class is geared for all level quilters.

Note: Students will be mailed a supply list and the description of the two variations of the Irish Chain when they register. Sewing machines are supplied, but if you do decide to bring in your own machine, please make sure it is in good working order. Students should bring a lunch and meet instructor at the main entrance at 9:00 AM.

Soap Making: The Basics and Beyond S14HC05 - Essentials of Soap Making

If you’re intrigued by the idea of making your own soap but the instructions you’ve seen just seem too complicated and scary, this class is for you. We’ll make both glycerin and lye soaps to take home, using only natural ingredients and pure essential oils to color, decorate and scent your sample bars. You’ll leave with all the information and confidence to make your own soap at home, whether you are looking for a quick batch of handmade gifts or want to get into serious soaping and soap sales.
Note: Some molds will be provided, but please bring any soap molds you already have, or at least four one-cup lidded plastic storage containers. If you have any soap you would like to use for re-milling, please bring it as well.
Rosemary Nolan maintains an organic garden and makes her own soap, cheese, beer and butter.

Hobbies & CraftsS14HC08 - Pottery: Wheel-Throwing Essentials

Learn the construction, refinement, and glazing of mugs, bowls, vases, and jars which will provide beginners with a strong foundation in throwing essentials. Creative approaches to the alteration and composition of thrown forms will provide challenges for experienced students. Everyone can gain from developing this new skill set. This class will include wheel work, centering, pulling, shaping, and trimming; basic glaze application and safety issues involved in ceramics.

Note: Instructor will collect a $14 fee for clay and hand out a list of supplies on first night of class.

Leah Guerin has a  B.F.A. in Ceramics and a Masters in Art Education from UMass Dartmouth. Pottery is her favorite art form. Leah has been a full-time studio potter for over five years.

You will discover where to look and what resources are available to help you uncover what could be a fascinating family history and a great pastime.

Doris Blais Bonnell is a professional genealogist, photographer and writer. She is a member of the Massachusetts Society of Genealogists, Inc., and of the Marlborough Historical Society.

Hobbies & CraftsS14HC12 - Stained Glass for Beginners and Intermediates

Learn one of the oldest art forms in the world and construct your own stained glass window panel to display in your home. This class will teach you the basics - or refine your skills - in the copper foil method made popular by Tiffany. The class will include glass cutting, foiling, and soldering techniques.

Note: The instructor will provide patterns for beginners. An optional $60 supplies fee (payable to the instructor) will include the use of tools, supplies, and glass or students may purchase their own tools, supplies and glass from a list given out at the first class.

This is your opportunity to try a stained glass class without the commitment. Learn the basics of stained glass in this three hour class: you will cut, foil, and solder a colorful, five-piece beveled sun catcher to enhance your home or office.

Note: A $10 materials fee payable to the instructor will be collected during class.

S14HC19 - Clothing Alteration

Since most clothing today is mass produced and conforms to standard sizing, everyone will need clothing alterations because we all have different body shapes. This course will teach you to alter, restyle and recycle garments. This class will include machine stitches and functions; tailoring and fitting techniques; and tailoring tools.

Note: This class is for those who have basic level sewing skills.

Julia Ellsworth, fluent in both Portuguese and Spanish, is an experienced bridal seamstress located in Hudson, MA. She has been altering and tailoring for more than 25 years.

Hobbies & CraftsS14HC20 - Paper Piercing Quilt

Paper Piecing quilts are made by sewing a fabric block onto a paper foundation. Once the quilt is done, the paper is ripped off the back. This concept is ideal for quilts that have difficult points or angels that would be hard to make with regular piecing. During class, students will sew small samples using this method, which can then be applied to any size quilt. This class is geared for all level quilters.

Note: Students will be mailed a supply list upon registration. Sewing machines are supplied, but if you do decide to bring in your own machine, please make sure it is in good working order. Students should meet the instructor at the main entrance at 9:00 AM.

S14HC21 - Bead Weaving Workshop

Beads have been used by Native Americans to create colorful, intricate patterns for jewelry and decorative items for many years. In this workshop, we will look briefly at the history of Native American beadwork and the student will learn how to create their own jewelry using a bead loom. All materials will be provided by the instructor. Note: A materials fee of $20 is payable to the instructor the first night of class.

Jennifer Ferrari, M.Ed., is a local high school visual arts and ceramics teacher. She is a self-taught jewelry designer. Her favorites include wire, beading, fabrics, and clay (earthenware and synthetic).
